The Stormers’ women basketball team lost another contest to top-ranked juggernaut Rock Valley College Golden Eagles by a score of 96-77 on Saturday, Feb. 22 to close out their regular season. The Stormers’ previous loss to Rock Valley took place Jan. 29 on the road.
The Stormers were without All-Conference and All-Region guard Ashley McHenry, who missed the game due to injury. Benetta Jones, also named to both the All-Conference and All-Region teams, poured in 31 points to lead all scorers in an emotional effort in front of the home crowd. Her 11 rebounds led all players in that category as well.

Rock Valley was able to capitalize on the Stormers’ 30 turnovers, converting 32 points after takeaways. The Golden Eagles also received strong play from their bench, getting 32 points from non-starters. Guard Marquiesha Grant had 21 points and nine assists to lead Rock Valley in both of those areas while playing all 40 minutes of the game.
Only one other MATC player besides Jones scored in double figures, a deep contrast to their opponents who finished the game with a total of six players notching more than 10 points. It was guard Shonnice Vaughn who had 11 for the Stormers. She was also one of four MATC starters to foul out of the game, the others being Jones, guard Sakeenah Rashada, and forward Emerald Kidd.
Even with the loss, the game marked the end of a successful regular season for the Stormers as they finished with 24 wins and five losses.
They were as good on the road as they were at home, going 11-2 both here and away and 2-1 in neutral sites. The two losses to Rock Valley bookended a season-high eight game win streak for a team that spent much of the season nationally ranked. The year draws to a close with the Stormers at the number seven spot.
