Stormers volleyball team loses close set

The women’s volleyball team faced another winless team in Triton College on Sept. 2. The Stormers made a valiant effort but in the end could not beat the Trojans.
Alyssa Nihart, setter and outside hitter, led the team with spikes. When a spike is hit over the net and not returned, it’s called a kill. Nihart had the most kills.
The team had several service aces throughout the sets. A service ace is a ball served over the net, not touched by an opposing player, and not returned.
Ashley Oldenburg, middle blocker, led the team with blocks.  A stuff block is when a player, like Oldenburg, stops the ball above the net from a person who has just spiked the ball.
The women made a comeback in the last set against the Trojans. Nihart had a string of good serves, and the team volleyed to win points. Marissa Tun, libero, bumped the ball to setter Tara Tucker, who set it for Nihart. The team nearly won the set, forcing the Trojans to score more than the normal 25 points to win. In women’s volleyball, the first team to score 25 points wins, but the team must win by two points. The score was 26-28.
There’s only one returning player from last year on the Stormers, Halle Ringelberg, outside hitter and middle blocker.sportsPhoto by Wendi Coon/Kirsten Schmitt
