Basketball is a team game. And, according to the box score, the MATC men played like a team in their 59-50 victory over the Richard J. Daley College Bulldogs on Dec. 6. The game was played at Alverno College, where MATC plays all of its home contests.
All 12 MATC players who played in the game scored. Kamar Marshall led the team with 10 points. Austin Dunbar, Andre Neal, Maher Hakim and Evan Burlingame had six apiece. Steve Stovall, Jr., Kevin Kellner and John Peters each chipped in five points. Draylen Fair and Melvin Brown both scored four points. Allante Washington and Vincent Preyer added one each. Thirty-four of the 59 total points came from non-starters. MATC demonstrated some good ball movement to make this possible, ending up with 14 assists.
It was a different story for Daley, with the majority of their points coming from Marquette Muhammad, with 21, and Ahmari Maholmes, with 19. The Bulldogs only managed to finish the game with six assists.
The Stormers shot 45.8 percent on field goals to Daley’s 32.1. MATC also won the rebounding battle, recording 44 boards to Daley’s 31. Austin Dunbar led all players with 11 rebounds. John Peters recorded two steals for MATC.
A bright side for Daley was their free throw shooting, hitting 12 of 17 from the line. MATC did not fare so well from the charity stripe, hitting only 10 out of 27 tries. Draylen Fair and John Peters both made the two shots they each took from there, however.
The win improved the Stormers’ record to eight wins and two losses. Their most recent loss came against Rochester Community Technical College on Nov. 21.
MATC begins conference play on Jan. 7 against the College of DuPage.
