Students learn about health risks and cancer

June is Men’s Health Awareness Month. The President’s Diversity Council (PDC), MATC Counseling & Advising and the Men of Color Initiative (MOCI) sponsored MATC’s second annual event. Throughout the month of June, students went to clinics at the Downtown Milwaukee campus.
The event opened on June 4 with Wake Up & Smell the Coffee, a presentation about prostate cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. About 1 man in 38 will die of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it.
Froedtert Hospital offered wellness checks, and gave out information about health and medical insurance. U.S. Bank held a Money 101 workshop. LaVerne Harmon taught about reducing stress and the benefits of yoga. Lex Allen performed in the Cooley Auditorium on June 18, and Maximized Living Health Center representatives spoke about back problems.
Every day there was a Community Resource Fair, which had many other exhibitors for students to learn from. The event ended on June 25 with the Department of Workforce Develoment workshop on job preparedness.

Pop/soul singer Lex Allen performed on June 16 at MATC Downtown Milwaukee campus as part of Men’s Health Awareness Month. Allen’s song “Breathe Easy” was inspired by his father’s battle with breast cancer.
