Dear Student Legal Clinic,
I need to find housing for myself and my two daughters. I work part-time and need to be close to my job.
Signed Aaisha
Dear Aaisha,
MATC does not have any student housing. The Student Legal Clinic has information on the laws regarding renting and you can pick up that information at the information tables located on the 3rd floor of the Main Building outside of M346 or on the H Building Bridge. You can also receive information by email by sending a request to [email protected], or by visiting www.datcp.wi.gov.
The Student Legal Clinic also has referrals for legal representation or advice should you have a problem with your landlord such as eviction or security deposit dispute.
Here is a list of websites to help you in your apartment search.
www.hud.gov This website gives you lists of privately owned, but federally subsidized housing. You would pay 30% of your income for rent. There are often long waiting lists for these apartments.
www.stcatherineresidence.org St. Catherine’s is a non-profit residence for women.
www.wifrontdoorhousing.org This is a state website for lower priced housing across Wisconsin.
www.jsonline.com/rentals This is the website for the area’s largest newspaper.
http://www.uwm.aux.uwm.edu/nho/UWM maintains this website for students and potential students.
You may also want to visit Community Advocates at 728 N. James Lovell St. for information about their Security Deposit Guaranty Program and the names of the landlords who work with that program.
To reach the Student Legal Clinic, stop in Room M346, email [email protected], or call 414-297-6630.
