Show offs! Interior Design program students compete at annual event

This is MATC’s entry for the NARI interior design contest.

The Interior Design program students demonstrated their skills at the NARI Home Improvement Show at Wisconsin State Fair Park Expo Center and won first place.
Students from several different colleges showed their skills and built rooms that incorporated a theme.
They were given a 12-foot by 12-foot room and given the theme. This year’s theme was pets. Every school is judged by the public. The public votes on who has the best room and what they would love in their own home. Each school received a $750 donation for its Interior Design program and the winner got a nice plaque.
Chelsea Wendt, MATC Interior Design student, said they wanted to make a mud room first. They scrapped it when they realized that it would be way too much work. So they went with their second choice, a home office.
There were 10 students from MATC who worked on creating the home office. It first started with pictures and then they all contributed to making the home office pet-friendly and family- friendly at the same time. They worked about 30 hours to make a perfect piece that they all were proud of.
The design of the room was well-organized. John Nehmey, of Nehmey Construction, built the design areas. At the show, he said that he was always willing to help out the students. He built it for every school so they could start working on their rooms. The students worked hard and long to make their vision come to life. All the furniture in the home office was donated by Steinhafels.
Each student there had a blast working on it and would do it again. The students alternated each day of the show, Feb. 12 through Feb. 15, to answer any questions the public had and to proudly show their work of art.
MATC has a lot of amazing students in all programs that work hard but love what they do. And when they get to show off their work and be proud of it, they start to shine bright and smile wide. The students that participated in the NARI Home Improvement Show Interior Design Contest proved that as they showed off their room, sitting proudly in front of it.
They were proud of every detail. Maybe one day, they will be the ones redesigning your home office for your family and pets.
