It seems the economy is leaving less change in everyone’s pockets these days, and since students are almost always on a limited budget, it may seem like the things that make us feel best are the first to go. Even basics like haircuts can become commodities that are staved off until absolutely necessary. While it may seem like going to the salon or spa are extraordinary expenses, there are options right at MATC available for all students.
Our cosmetology and nail technology students offer services at a discounted rate. The cosmetology department offers haircuts and trims for men and women, color (highlights, lowlights, full color or tint), perms, relaxers, reverse curl, and styling (sets, waves, updos, braids). The nail department offers manicures, pedicures, paraffin conditioning treatments and nail overlays with your choice of materials. The appointment takes longer than normal, but the price is worth the wait!
You can find the salons on the first floor in the Main Building at the downtown location in Rooms M108, M116, M118, M124 and M126. They do welcome walk-ins, but suggest that you call 414-297-6399 for Hair Services and 414-297-6258 for Nail Services to book an appointment. You can help another student gain experience and help yourself look and feel better at a discounted price.
If you are not able to make it during the times available at MATC, there are other options available. The Institute of Beauty and Wellness offers hair, nail, massage and skin treatments using only Aveda products.

If you already have a person at a regular salon or spa that you like to see for services, it may not hurt to ask for a discount or to trade services. “Oftentimes we have artists and Web designers offer to trade artwork or Web design for services. If we are able to do it and see it as a fair trade, we will often trade and gain a sense of community along with it,” said Julie Koppelman, medical spa owner. Students also should not be afraid to ask for discounts. “We will also work with people if we see that they are a student with a limited budget. Oftentimes those people turn out to be your best clients later because they appreciate you giving them a break.”
Exams and homework can seem overwhelming to students, and oftentimes a little relaxation will help us focus better. Juggling family life, school and work commitments don’t leave a lot of time to leave the house and get away. Something that can be made right in your kitchen without a lot of cash can help soften rough hands and elbows and help you relax before that big test.
Make your own sugar or salt scrub by combining cane sugar or Epsom salts with olive, safflower or sweet almond oil. Add 5 to 20 drops of an essential oil like lemon, lavender, rose or any combination of oils you enjoy. Mix in a bowl, apply with spatula or tongue depressor to rough areas, rub lightly, rinse and enjoy baby soft skin.
