The smash and grabs are still occurring at the Downtown Milwaukee Campus parking structures. Recently, two cars parked at the 8th and State St. structure were hit. One of the victims was student Leeann Parshalle. According to Parshalle, no one was hurt, nothing was taken and both cars were drive-able in these break-ins. However, “the owners still have to clean up a mess, and pay for new windows,” she explained in an e-mail.
At the 8th and State St. parking structure, there is one guard on duty. However, they remain located at the elevator entrance, the office or by the pay booths.
Although Parshalle sees these as important areas, she feels more needs to be done. “The vandals can enter and exit from a variety of areas, via foot or in a car,” she said.
“Another problem is the guards have no phones, and apparently cannot use their radios to contact MATC Public Safety unless they go to the parking structure’s office,” she expressed.
According to a Public Safety e-mail, this isn’t the only parking structure being hit. The Bradley Center and 8th St. and Highland Ave. both have had break-ins.
Public Safety does state that they have increased their presence, and have informed Milwaukee Police who, they say, will increase their patrols as well.
Public Safety encourages students to report suspicious activity and/or individuals to their office by calling 414-297-6588.
