Sponsored by the Student Life and the Student Legal Clinic, a health fair occurred on March 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 2nd floor of the S Building, Downtown Milwaukee Campus. The purpose of this fair was to provide students with choices of health services offered at the campus and to bring resources that people would not know existed to the campus.There were 10 exhibitions at the fair. The exhibitions were: Echo Cardiac Ultra Sound, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Campaigning, Social Development Commission, Immunization, Chiropractic information, PACE Program, Lead Presentation, Alcohol Presentation, Well Woman for Breast Cancer and Free STD/HIV Testing.
The Echo Cardiac Ultra Sound and the Immunization were for people who do not have health insurance. They are a part of the Milwaukee Health Department. The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Campaign is also a part of the Milwaukee Health Department and helped by the Black Student Union (BSU). The campaign provided free condoms on the table to promote the teen pregnancy prevention campaign and offered STD/HIV resources as well.
Also at the fair was the Social Development Commission, which is a new program that provides and connects families with community resources. Also, on the brochure it stated that the commission provides applications for public benefits such as BadgerCare+ Health Insurance and Food Share food stamps benefits), along with free VITA tax preparation and workshops on financial literacy, health education and weatherization. The commission is located on 4041 N. Richards St.
Also at the fair was information regarding immunization for those who do not have health insurance, chiropractic by Dr. Sara Zach, PACE Program, Lead Presentation and Alcohol Presentation. Along with these was MBCCAP, a mammography center in Milwaukee, where people who cannot afford a mammogram or pap test can get what they need here. There are two locations for the MBCCAP: Martin Luther King Heritage Health Center on 2555 N. Martin Luther King Dr. and Southside Health Center on 1639 S. 23 St. For more information regarding the MBCCAP, the contact at 414-286-2133.
And lastly, the most popularly-visited table was the STD/HIV Testing table. It is provided by the Milwaukee Health Department and hosted by Bill Borzon, Public Health Educator. At this table, students were able to get STD/HIV screening for free.
