Approximately 30 students were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society and the Sigma Theta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society on April 3.There were many guest speakers, including Director of Student Life Archie Graham, Associate Provost Dr. Daniel Burrel and Pam Curtin of Student Services.
Each talked about how good the college and these students are. “You are the best among 55,000,” Graham said.
For each ceremony, each student received a white rose and certificate.
In between the two inductions, Dr. Burrel lit a candle and passed it to the student next to him, and that one to the next, until each student’s candle was lit. This was the “passing of the torch of knowledge.” After the event was a small dinner.
According to Graham, the honor society has four specific purposes: to promote the ideal of honesty, service and leadership, and promote career development and skilled workmanship among the technical students of America, to reward meritorious achievement in technical education, to encourage and assist technical students and the pursuit of educational and career goals, to encourage and assist awareness within American businesses, industry, and service communities about the talents and abilities of students engaged in technical education, and to provide technical students with a great awareness of the world of work.
