Recently, a group of students worked together with Roundy’s Foods and the Hunger Task Force to distribute food to underprivileged people at the annual Roundy’s Food Festival. This event, which takes place twice a year during the spring and fall, drew local media attention and allowed citizens to display their generosity toward the needy.
Bob Mariano, chairman of Roundy’s Foods, helped organize the event and was in attendance to give a speech about the festival.
“I feel very good (about the festival). It’s a small way to help people who are very much in need.” said Mariano.
Seven members of the Sigma Phi Sigma also volunteered at the event and were very productive in distributing the food products to the people. On that same day, Roundy’s traveled to West Bend and Milwaukee distributing food.
Ten food pantries from the Milwaukee area also participated and donated food in the event. Roundy’s gives out food to close to 500 people a month.
There were 3,000 pounds ready to be given out, according to Janet Frey. Plus, a $500 check was awarded to all pantries and organizations who participated in the festival.
Janet Frey, a member of the Holy Assumption Church, recruited people to help unload the trucks containing the food to be distributed.
Frey was called by the Roundy’s Foundation to help out in the event. Frey requested the assistance of Jerry O’Sullivan, Student Life Coordinator, West Allis Campus, who very happily agreed to help. O’Sullivan contacted the Sigma Phi Sigma to help out in the event.
“I think it’s important for student leaders to represent MATC in the greater Milwaukee community. It’s important for organizations like Sigma Phi Sigma to show the quality of students here at MATC.” O’Sullivan. said.
