There is a new Pom Pom dance organization this semester. Kasandra Haliburton, a current MATC student who will serve as the team’s coordinator, is organizing a dance squad whose routines consist of a combination of funk, jazz, ballet and pom pom style moves.
The squad, named the Stormerettes, is a separately recognized organization on the college’s campus.During the basketball season, the Stormerettes will perform at certain men’s and women’s games.
According to Kasandra Haliburton, the squad will consist of 12 to 18 dancers with six or nine being on varsity and six or nine being on junior varsity.
The squad plans to perform during the pre-game and halftime periods. This will be the institution’s first pom pom dance team.
“I am starting this team because it is an element that we here at MATC are missing.
“It’s a chance to widen the possibilities for female athletics and to enhance and support our fellow Stormers teams, such as men’s and women’s basketball.
“This team is going to take a lot of hard work and determination, but my main goal is to have a good time and celebrate this school year by getting involved,” said Haliburton.
The team would like to perform at all the home games, which take place at Alverno College, and some away games, depending on transportation.
