A previous Times Editor in-Chief from 2002-2003, Jenny Farris, passed away on July 25th of this year.Even though she was only 32 at the time of her death, she had already accomplished more in those short 32 years than some can do in 100. Just at the MATC Times alone she had been a feature’s editor, photography editor, senior editor and editor in chief.
Farris covered an array of topics ranging from exercise, sports, entertainment, public safety, racism, and much more.
From the work she left behind here at MATC, one can tell that Farris took full advantage of every opportunity to positively impact social change.
In an article written by Farris herself, she describes her goals and says, “Life’s challenges are what keep me pushing forward. People will constantly try to keep you down, but you just have to look past the negative and seek out the positive things in life.”
As a student, she studied photography and brought to the table a Visual Arts background, which only added to her interest in photojournalism. Farris also participated in an internship at the National Association of Black Journalists where she learned about the professionalism aspect of journalism and applied it to her job here as editor-in-chief.
Farris also stated in an article that she felt, “The great thing about MATC is that the school is so diverse, and I feel the paper should be doing more to send the message of diversity.”
Archie Graham, Director of Student Life, had the opportunity of knowing Farris while she attended school here and had this to say about her: “Jenny M. Farris was part of an exclusive club being one of (the) few African American EIC’s of the TIMES.
Her expertise in photo- journalism propelled the TIMES to receiving several honors throughout her career here at MATC.
The TIMES truly had a gem with her involvement and participation.”
Her experience at the TIMES enabled her to further her career as she became a member of the Journal Sentinel staff and continued her skills as an expert photojournalist.
