Earlier in the semester MATC had a stabbing at the Downtown Campus of the college, while some of us were in class, working, roaming the halls or whatever it may be.
It seemed as if George Baker and Marshall Haley were in the right place at the right time, on the third floor in the Student Government office.
They were sitting there chatting and they started hearing screams. The type of screams that Marshall Haley identified as “screams of distress”.
Baker said, “Maybe someone fell or maybe it was a spider. But what I saw was unexpected, definitely not what I thought it would be.”
When asked what was going through his head when he arrived on the scene, Haley said, “I felt like I had to stop it. We kicked down the door and he looked at us and stabbed her again.”
Afterwards Baker was in shock. “It was so surreal,” he said. Haley says he was angry afterwards, “It was foul and she was so helpless.” Haley compared the feeling to what one would feel when someone beats up a child.
When asked if this event had changed them in any way, Baker replied, “Now I know I can do this and I would do it again.”Haley took a different turn with his response, “In a sense, it makes me feel like I have to get in shape. That was so unexpected. What if I had gotten stabbed? You know I got trained in taking a knife from someone.”
I asked him if he was worried about being stabbed when he came to the rescue. He replies “Naw, I didn’t have time to think about that.”
Fox 6 News reported that these guys would not call themselves heroes. So when asked if they still would not call themselves heroes, Baker replied, “A small part of me feels like I am. I was just doing what I felt anyone would do, call it blind faith or whatever. But I still stand by my first statement. I’m no hero.”
Haley stated, “I felt like I just helped out. It’s up to others and her to decide that, not me. But if someone says I’m a hero, that’s cool too. Because I could grab my cape,” he stated jokingly.
Baker and Haley are both students here at MATC. Baker is in the associate degree program of Liberal Arts and Science pursuing teacher education. He plans to go to UW-Milwaukee upon graduating to major in history and pursue his doctorate.
Baker plans on being an urban archaeologist and dig up modern day ruins.
Haley is the owner of a company that promotes videos and graphics. His program is Visual Communications and Computer Graphics. He wants to direct movies and music videos. He plans on being the next Hype Williams or Spike Lee.
Kimberleah Bledsoe, the president of the Student Government calls George confident, “He likes to be in control at all times.” And when asked about Marshall, she says, “He’s real ambitious and teachable. He seems honest and hard working.”
