I am no food concierge. I could attempt to direct you to Milwaukee’s finest sushi bar, hibachi house or bistro with the most authentic foreign fare. And while that all sounds wonderful (and expensive), I would like to believe that I am not the only college student groveling under the recession. Truthfully, at this point in my life I cannot yet appreciate (or afford) something like fried slugs, drizzled in pungent gourmet sauce.Let’s be honest, there is simply nothing like a classic grilled cheese sandwich. While I would just love to prepare my own grilled cheese sandwich, faltering my whim, I am usually lacking: A. bread, B. cheese or C. the skill to keep one or both sides of the sandwich from escaping char. So when I heard about a restaurant that solely prepares grilled cheese sandwiches, my and so many others’ cheesy dreams were fulfilled.
The Cheesy Grill, owned by Joe and Penny O’Hare, began as somewhat of a joke. One day one of the O’Hare’s three sons asked how to get rich. Joe told him to quit college and work at McDonald’s. He then shared the story of Dave Thomas who became wealthy after working his way up at Kentucky Fried Chicken until he could afford to buy dozens of KFC franchises. Once Thomas developed his own fast food concept he started Wendy’s.
When his son asked what concept he would create, Joe said he would choose grilled cheese sandwiches.
“You have to start your own concept. Make sure nobody is doing it and everybody loves it,” said Joe, “Everybody loves grilled cheese.”
After thinking more about it, Joe and his family began cooking up ideas, literally. Fast forward to January of this year and with a great menu and Penny’s creative intuition the Cheesy Grill opened at 2155 Miller Park Way in West Milwaukee.
Simply put, the food is delicious and extremely affordable. I guarantee you will walk away with a full stomach.
“Grilled cheese is comfort food,” said Joe. “People come here to feel good.
