Role Models, directed by David Wain, is a comedy starring Paul Rudd (The Object of My Affection, Clueless) as Danny, a rude and condescending salesman of Minotaur energy drink for teenagers. Seann William Scott (American Pie) plays Wheeler, Danny’s go-with-the-flow co-worker and friend (or so Wheeler thinks). After reluctantly celebrating his 10th year at the job he hates and getting dumped by his girlfriend, Danny drinks too much Minotaur and ends up getting himself and Wheeler arrested.
In order to avoid jail time, the two men are required to do community service, acting as mentors to two young boys (Superbad’s Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Bobb’e J. Thompson).
Scott basically plays a slightly more mature version of Stifler, his character from American Pie. Rudd, who co-wrote Role Models, basically plays the same version of every other movie character he’s ever played.
Both Rudd and Scott have the movie stolen from them by Thompson and Jane Lynch, who plays the director of the mentoring program.
Aside from a few humorous one-liners and one unexpected fight scene there is not anything incredibly funny or interesting about this movie.
That’s not to say Role Models won’t make you laugh (it will), but you can see every joke coming from a mile away. If that kind of simplistic humor amuses you, then you’ll love Role Models.
