Microsoft may be trying to cash in on the success of the Wii and its unique controller. Anonymous sources have leaked that Microsoft is making a motion-sensing controller, rather like that of the Nintendo Wii, for its XBOX 360 console. If this information is true, how the new controller will be received is anyone’s guess. Will developers start making games that take advantage of the motion-sensing technology, or will they stick with the tried and true standard controller? The market is certainly there; the continued success of the Wii is proof of that. And there are many players who enjoy the Wii’s style of gaming.
However, many traditionalists prefer the old controller and don’t want to see gimmicky games made just so that players can wave their hands in the air.
When a game is forced in to a mold just to use a new bit of hardware, we all suffer; one can easily point to Call of Duty 3 as an example of this. COD3 was made for both the Wii and XBOX 360. When reviewed by Gamespot, the Wii version’s score suffered in large part because the Wii-mote is not a good choice for that type of game.
Sometimes change is good. If game developers start making games that truly benefit from a new controller, then we win. If we start to see games that force you to use a controller that is not meant for that kind of game, well, then, it just might be game over.
