Times Staff ReporterIt’s another season of sweet victory in Women’s Basketball led by second season MATC Head Coach Brandon Dean. Upon arriving last season, Coach Dean had the goal of digging the Stormers out of a 10-year losing streak.
“Last season, we played competitively in all our games,” said Dean. “We won one game in the WJCAA Region III playoffs to end the losing streak.” The team’s only first year player, Amy Blom, earned WJCAA All State Honors and six players earned Academic All-Conference.
This season’s starting lineup includes scoring leader Freshman Guard/Forward, #23, Yanette Feagin (Mansfield, OH), who averages over 23 points per game. The “general” of the floor, Freshman Guard, #21, Sam Ballman (Glendale, WI), is a consistent, solid player.
Returning from last season, Rachel Kohn, is a strong post player. She’s one of the top scorers at just over 12 points per game and also holds the team’s highest GPA. Freshmen Forward, #15, Lisa Sherpy (Milwaukee, WI), has an average of more than 10 points per game, for a solid season.
Second season Sophomore Forward, #32, Amy Blom (Janesville, WI), “is the foundation upon which the MATC Women’s Basketball Program has built its progress,” said Coach Dean.
“Amy is a hardworking player who gives valuable minutes in every game. She is a good student first and a dedicated basketball player second.”
In the second semester, the Stormers lost several players and had to forfeit the Central Lakes Tournament due to ineligibility. The team record is currently 7 wins and 11 losses, after winning their first conference game since their 1992-1993 season. Their conference record is 2 wins and 2 losses.
As the season storms on, Coach Dean and his mighty Stormers are optimistic. The motto is “Stormers to State,” as they strive to clinch the WJCAA Region III and contend for the WJCAA State Championship. Let’s feed the storm by giving our support. Go Stormers!
