Everyone hears about the Stormers and what the Senate is up to, but rarely do you hear about the clubs of MATC and what they’re doing. And so often events and competitions are missed or ignored, which is a shame. But not this time.MATC’s Chess Club has begun its first ladder tournament. The semester-long tournament will pit the Chess Club’s best players against each other as well as other players from around the college. While chess tournaments are nothing new, this year’s competition is different.
Organized by Brian Spaeth, an Educational Assistant from the Academic Support center, the tournament’s ladder system is a first for the Chess Club; a win moves the player up by three rungs, a tie moves both players up one, and a loss leaves the player where he/she was.
The top four players at the end of the semester will win cash prizes, the number one spot earning $100. Currently, the top four players are: Mashbat Dashdendev, Phosy Rodthonog, Nathan Spaeth and Keith Smith.
Player registration is now closed, but anyone interested in watching a match can visit the tournament in the Student Union on every other Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:30p.m. and in Room M576 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., both at the Downtown Milwaukee Campus.
Whether you are thinking about joining the Chess Club or just interested in watching a few matches, now is the time.
