The MATC Downtown Campus library is undergoing major improvements which is transforming the library into an area more conducive to learning. To date, $37,500 of the business division’s budget has been spent on the changes which should be completed by mid-March.
“The space is more inviting, the natural light (from glass blocks)is invigorating,” said Jennifer Medved, campus librarian, “and the imaginative student work that is displayed helps draw attention to the idea that this space is not our library, but your library – that is, a place for students to feel not only invited, but at home.” Reference books have been scaled down by 75 percent to open up space in the library. Where the books were housed is now home to soft chairs and a quiet and comfortable study area. More café-style tables and three-person pods will be added to create diverse learning spaces.
The biggest addition to the library is the Legal Research center. The center is equipped with ample space, a screen for presentations, five computers and legal books.
“The paralegal extension was long overdue,” said Medved. “The space previously allotted was cramped and dimly lit. The new room affords students the space needed and a professional atmosphere in which to research and study.”
The Paralegal division funded the changes of a classroom into the legal center. No ID is needed for entry; however students should be engaged in legal research to work in there. Since the area may be utilized by classes and the legal tutor, it will occasionally be restricted.
“Our utilization is going up which is a good indication that we are on the right track, and the feedback we have gotten has been good for the changes we have made,” said Jeff Grossman, manager of Library and Information Services, speaking of the seat counts since the changes.
MATC isn’t stopping with just library changes. The MATC library is now available via the MATC 2Go app (currently on iOS but coming soon for Android). LibraryAnywhere is an app that allows students to search the catalog, renew items, and check their library account from anywhere. This is just the start for the innovative faculty of MATC’s libraries who are working on improving all aspects of the library experience.
