An interest in geology became a study in landscaping for Andy Heinowski. Heinowski was a Geology student at MATC in 2009 and later transferred to UW-Milwaukee.After a chance meeting, Mark Bocek, West Allis Campus maintenance staff, and Heinowski later discovered a common desire to use landscaping and volunteerism as a means of therapy. Both of their mothers died on the same day in 2008.
Heinowski applied his Geology course studies from MATC to help pick out boulders from various geologically diverse areas of Wisconsin.
The rocks are filled with unique shapes and bold patterns due to their geological origins. The results became a stunning display of color and design which complemented the landscaping done by Bocek and Heinowski.
The labor was intensive and took long hours, sometimes into the evening for both of them. “It was all worth it.the results were more than I could have asked for,” said Heinowski.
Bocek agreed. “Andy became a real asset in making this project work.the outside of the West Allis Campus has an entirely new look thanks to Andy’s efforts.”
Both Heinowski and Bocek received additional help from Cleo Flucker, Operations Manager. Trees, flowers and boulders from Wisconsin all compliment each other in symmetry of color and well-placed design.
The landscaping includes areas around the buildings as well as the parking lots. Neighbors in the area have already commented on the beauty of the project, according to Bocek and Heinowski.
The results are definitely award-winning material. Students are invited to look around the West Allis Campus to view the results.
