MATC students will have the opportunity to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election thanks to the Student Senate. With the state of the economy, ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, high concerns about national security, and affordable healthcare still out of reach for many Americans, the upcoming presidential election will be one of our nation’s most important.
This fact is not lost on MATC leaders, and they intend to make sure students will be ready to vote come November 4. “We want to make sure people have an opportunity to vote,” said Archie Graham, Director of Student Life.
To ensure MATC students’ voices are heard this election, the Student Senate will be holding a voter registration drive October 14-16 in the S Building of the Downtown Milwaukee Campus.
The exact location has yet to be determined, but Student Senate President Beka Mayhew said it will either be held in atrium on the second floor or the third floor cafeteria.
During these days, MATC students eligible to vote will be able to register in time for the presidential election.
Mayhew said this will be the first voter registration event the organization has held in a while. “We haven’t done it in a few years, but we wanted to get it back up with such a hot campaign going on.”
Graham added that MATC in the past has held voter registration drives for all elections, but the emphasis of this one would be the presidential election.
According to Mayhew, to be eligible to vote you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin and a United States citizen.
You must also be at least 18 years old at the time you register and be able to provide proof of residency, such as a letter or bill addressed to your home.
To register students should know their social security number and the address and county where they live. A valid state driver’s license or identification card is also required. Mayhew says that knowing your driver’s license number will also work.
The Student Senate will offer information on Senators Barack Obama and John McCain, both candidates’ running mates and their stances on policies at the registration drive.
“Both candidates’ information will be available and equal information shared,” said Mayhew. They will also provide information on district layouts to help students determine in which district they live and where they should vote on Election Day. The Student Senate is not endorsing any presidential candidate.
