Fueled by the Mosque debate in New York earlier this year, the West Campus Student Government has decided to host an Understanding Islam seminar in late March. “We wanted to give the option to anyone who doesn’t understand Islam to come learn more about it,” said Travis Lilach, President of West Campus Student Government.
The purpose of this seminar is to break stereotypes and give students the opportunity to gain more knowledge about the Islamic religion and everything it entails. Being that MATC is a highly diverse college, Student Government decided that they should make an effort to help students understand people from all paths of life.
“The purpose of this seminar is not to try and convert people to Islam,” states Doug Meyer, West Campus Student Senator, “but just to inform them about it.”
The speaker for the seminar has yet to be established, but will undoubtedly be a representative from the Islamic Society of Milwaukee.
The event is most likely going to be held on March 30 or 31 in Rm. 117, with a time yet to be established. More information will be given to the students in late March.
