Special day for TV students airing soon

On Saturday, May 9, the Television and Video Production program will broadcast its annual Student Operations Day on Milwaukee Public Television Channel 36.1. Ops, as it is known among staff and students, grants the students the opportunity to program the station for an entire day.
Miesha Armstrong, Television and Video Production student, was chosen to act as Student Operations’ Promotions. Armstrong answered some questions for the Times about what viewers can expect by tuning in that day.

Q: What is Ops Day?
A: Ops Day, or Student Operations Day, is a day where only MATC student productions are shown. We create our own 30-minute television shows to air. We are able to get as creative as we want and showcase our technical skills.

Q: Who benefits the most from this special day of broadcasting?
A: The students benefit the most. We are able to build work to put on our resume reels. There are not too many students that have the pleasure of attending a school with an actual TV station inside. They allow us to air our work, so that’s a major benefit.

Q: What are some of the programs that will air?
A: “The Adventures of Safety Kid,” “Tomorrow Wasn’t the Last,” “Trials of Science,” “The Order,” “The Movement,” “Skit Back and Relax,” just to name a few.

Q: Why is Ops Day important to the TVP students?
A: We have an opportunity for our work to be advertised and shown on TV. Potential employers will possibly see it. It’s also fun for us. If you’re passionate about it then you enjoy putting it out there for others to see.

Q: When did work begin for Ops Day?
A: We started working on it right after our student workshop shows were over in February.

Q: Where will Ops Day take its viewers? Anywhere unique?
A: I’m actually the field host for the day, so we are going around to get interviews from people at the Color Run that’s taking place that day, the Pettit Center and Discovery World.
