Free flags and copies of the U.S. Constitution were available to the public at the Oak Creek campus on Sept. 17.

In commemoration of Constitution Day, Sept. 17, the Office of Student Life celebrated with tables full of star-spangled bandanas, flags, coffee mug sleeves and many other items, including the Constitution, for everyone on campus at no cost. Established by the federal government, the day is nationally recognized.

Student Robert Anderson, mechanical design major, grabbed flags, bracelets and a Constitution booklet. Anderson recalls the U.S. Constitution as being, “The right to free speech and freedom of the press.” He really liked the fact that the Constitution was created as a safeguard to its citizens.

Anderson said he believes that the Constitution has helped his rights to not be violated and that everyone should have knowledge of their rights. He was very grateful for the booklet that he received for free and said it would definitely help him get familiar with the amendments and parts of the Constitution that he isn’t familiar with.

In addition to Anderson, Danielle Burg, a Baking and Pastry Arts program student, shared her smile and displayed a red, white and blue ribbon on her shirt in remembrance of Constitution Day. What Burg recalls as important to her about the Constitution is the Fifth Amendment, which most people are familiar with and refer to as “The right to remain silent.” Burg said, “I believe it’s important to establish laws that protect everyone.” She is very happy that in the United States we have the Constitution, that was written by our forefathers to help us do that. Burg went a step further to explain that we in Wisconsin have our own constitution, and that she is proud to be a resident of Wisconsin.

A chairperson for Student Government came out to support the function at the Oak Creek campus. Coordinator for the Office of Student Life, Rita Wood, set up the display tables, handed out supplies and shouted merrily,“Happy Constitution Day,” to all who passed by. Another person who stopped by in support of the celebration was the director of MATC’s police training academy, Richard Cole. Cole grabbed a few Constitution books to share with some of his students, as Cole is also an instructor for the Constitutional Law course.

Students, happy to receive the freebies, walked away with smiles on their faces and knowledge in their pockets!
