MATC parents now have a safe space to drop off their kids when they run errands on campus. Instead of struggling with them when visiting an advisor or discussing a test score with an instructor, parents can take their kids to a new drop-in center.
This Parent Resource Center is called Little Stormers Village and it’s located in M172. It’s easy to find, across the hall from the 6th Street Cafe on the first floor of the M Building. There was an Open House, on July 10, for the MATC community to see the space and meet the staff. Little Stormers opened on Monday, July 22, several weeks before the Fall 2024 semester starts. And, the best part is that this service is FREE. Parents can register for a maximum of three hours of child care in one day for children from 6 months to 10 years old. It’s open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
This is a welcome addition for me and all parents at MATC. I have a one-and-a-half year old daughter named Milani. The last time I took her to an appointment on campus, she spit up on my shirt. When I’ve tried to stop at the library, she’s gotten fussy or I’ve had to change her diaper, so I end up leaving and not getting my business done. This center is taking away barriers and removing child-related inconveniences for students to continue their education.
The person who gets thanks for this parent resource is retired MATC President Dr. Vicki J. Martin. It took three years to make this vision of hers a reality. On her parting week, she spoke at the Open House. Unfortunately, I was unable to hear her comments. However, I would like to publicly thank her so much on behalf of all student parents for helping us feel we belong here. Thank you Dr. Martin! This center is a memorable contribution to your lasting legacy. Current and future parents are extremely grateful for your vision to help students continue to succeed.
