I understand that navigating the educational system can be challenging, especially when you require specific accommodations to support your learning. As a legally blind student at MATC, I’d like to share some valuable information about how you can find out more about obtaining the accommodations you need to make your academic experience a successful one.
At MATC, the goal is to ensure that all students have equal access to educational opportunities. If you haven’t set up accommodations yet, but you feel that you need them, there is a dedicated process to help you get started. I’ll be walking you through the steps and resources available to assist you.
Steps to Obtaining Accommodations at MATC:
- Contact the Student Accommodation Services Office (SAS): Start by reaching out. The phone number is 414-297-6750 or go to the MATC website and search accommodations. They can provide you with detailed guidance on the steps you need to take. You also need to request a form that has to be filled out.
- Documentation: Gather any necessary documentation that supports your need for accommodations. You will have to give them provide documentation of the disability by alicensed professional (medical doctor, psychologist, licensed professional counselor, nurse or psychiatrist) and be enrolled at MATC.
- Complete the appropriate accommodation request form.
- Submit the accommodation request form and appropriate documentation of disability to the Accommodations and Accessibility Facilitator at the SAS as early as possible.
- Meet with a Disability Specialist to discuss approved accommodations, complete the Service Plan, and request in writing that your passport notification letter (your accommodations) can be shared with your instructors.
Also, when you talk to somebody about your plan, you will learn more about what they can offer. You do need to contact or reply to accommodations every semester to inform them that you want to use your accommodations.
If you’re pregnant, stay in school and complete your education. You can talk to somebody from the SAS to receive accommodations that help you stay in school during your pregnancy. If you have questions, follow the first step above and they will walk you through the process.
