We all love a good scary movie don’t we? The tension that you feel when a character makes a frightening decision that could lead to their downfall. Each rollercoaster of emotion pulls on you like a string. The constant feeling of paranoia and timidness. Whatever your reasoning may be for watching scary movies, I’m here today to recommend you watch even more during this spooky season that’ll get your anxiety going, your skin crawling, and wrapped in your own thoughts.
- Halloween is considered a timeless classic to many and is one of, if not the greatest scary movie to ever come out. To some it was the first movie that introduced them to the genre. For a film that came out in 1978, it holds up very well in the test of time. When watching, you get a constant feel of anxiety from the characters who do their jobs really well. From the music to the phenomenal casting, it’s nothing short of an amazing movie, and one I would recommend to you and others.
- Alien is the pure definition of uneasiness. From the start, the movie never gives you the opportunity to settle in. Also, the space team isn’t exactly friendly with one another either. So, not only do you feel the tension between the characters, but you also gain a sense of uncertainty when watching. Alien is one of the greatest science fiction horror films you’ll ever watch, and it would be a perfect movie to kick off the Halloween weekend.
- Us is a psychological horror and one of Jordan Peele’s newer films, but you can still feel the very elements from Get Out incorporated into this project as well. The acting is phenomenal through and through, and it has one of the best endings to a movie I’ve seen in recent memory. It’s a truly scary and spooky movie, and should definitely be a watch for the late-night Halloween weekend. If you don’t watch it, me and you will personally have issues to settle.
- Jaws (1975) is an ageless wonder and a nail-biting thriller that clings to your heart and gives you an experience of a lifetime. The suspense you feel from the music and the high- risk situations definitely gets your mind going and it’s certainly a movie that you should watch as well.
- Hereditary is set in a modern era and is an extremely dark, creepy horror film, and is one of the spookiest films I’ve ever watched in person. The story and cast are phenomenal, and it’s not surprising that it was up for numerous awards and won a great deal of them. The film always keeps you guessing so that you never know what’s coming next. if you want to experience a film that knocks your socks off, then this should be a no brainer for you.
- IT Part I: The Loser Club is truly an experience that you’ll never forget. IT was initially a novel written by the great Stephen King that turned into a film, and just like the rest of his novels, it leaves you with an uneasy and unsettling feeling. From beginning to end, the world of IT shows you that it’s not very welcoming and it’s not here to save face. If you’re the kind of person who likes a story that will leave you feeling uncomfortable, then this is the perfect movie for you.
- The Conjuring is a beautiful depiction of the “horror” genre. It’s one of the better films to come out in the past decade (2013), and it’s a very suspenseful film that draws your attention and keeps you in place. Written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes, the Conjuring is a generational film for the genre and also the catalyst for movies that are out today.
- A Quiet Place is one of the most popular franchises ever, and there’s a reason as to why it’s such a loved and respected film. It’s a post-apocalyptic horror film set in New York City. A Quiet Place is a movie that leaves no room for discomfort as even the quietest of noises can determine ones faith between living and dying, and constantly the characters are in fear because they don’t want to result in the enemies’ mess. I recommend this movie to you all because of the constant feel of uneasiness and uncertainty you get while watching. It’s a great film and if you’re someone who likes those types of movies then this film is perfect for you!
- Cabin In The Woods is an amazing movie with a great amount of thriller elements attached. This movie will absolutely leave you with a feeling that you never want to experience again, and I believe would be a great watch for those who want to truly experience the horror genre as a whole!
- Saw is considered a generational breakthrough for the horror/thriller genre and is used as an inspiration for many of the newer films that have been released during the 2010s era, and even now during the 2020 era. The movie’s intensive plot, created around the premise of survival instincts and moral choices, sets the stage for a variety of gruesome traps, twists and turns, and heart pulls. The movie is great from start to finish and if you’re someone who likes to have your heart pulled on constantly, then boy do I have a film for you.
Also, I want to recommend a couple of films that didn’t make the cut, but are still fantastic watches. These two movies are The Truman Show and Nightcrawler. These two movies don’t necessarily fit the criteria I set for myself, but despite that I would still highly recommend these films because they’re both terrifying in their own light. The Truman Show shows the scary situation of a man whose entire life is based on false truths and a reality that isn’t real, while Nightcrawler shows the limits of a man who is willing to do any and everything for the perfect story. While these two aren’t necessarily considered “horrors,” I still wanted to show some respect to the films that inspired this list of recommendations, separate from my Top 10 list.
