The Manufacturing, Construction & Transportation (MCT) Pathway hosted a gathering for women prospective students and returning students interested in trade-related programs. “The Labor Ladies, Empowering Women One Tool at a Time” was created to be a safe space amongst women students who are breaking barriers and paving the way for success for women in the trades. MCT advisors and retention coaches spoke to the students on January 15, about the resources available to them as students and how being peers to one another (especially) will help their journeys in this career field because adversary is inevitable as a woman in the trades.
MCT Pathway Dean Becky Alsup-Kingery spoke and shared her story of how she started in the trades and progressed to education. Women teachers in the MCT Pathway shared their experiences as well and were able to relate to the students. The students expressed gratitude and appreciation for this gathering as they were able to relate to the instructors and got to network with one another. Labor Ladies is not necessarily a union here on campus, but more of a support group intended to provide a safe space as well as resources for women students in trade-related programs.
