Student-athletes at MATC work hard to achieve their dreams by learning from their mistakes and surrounding themselves with supportive people. Among these students is Ky’Moni Hunt, whose hard work has not gone unnoticed. Let’s dive into the inspiring journey of Hunt, with insights from Assistant Basketball Coach Travis Mrozek who sheds light on why Hunt was signed and how he has made a significant impact to the team.
Who is Ky’Moni Hunt?
Hunt is from Milwaukee and graduated from Hamilton High School. The point guard is pursuing an associate degree in Architectural woodworking and cabinet. Hunt shares how he stays in shape during the offseason. “During my offseason, I make sure to stay active by hitting the gym regularly.” However, he also finds time to relax by playing video games and hanging out with friends. While he doesn’t have a specific genre of music he prefers, he is open to anything that captures his interest. His favorite TV show is “Boondocks” and his favorite movie is “Planet of the Apes.”
Hunt’s Challenges on the Court
Hunt recalls the challenges he faced when first joining the team, such as getting to know his teammates and understanding his role as a point guard. “I decided to join the team because my head coach (Randy Casey) was the first to offer me the position,” he explained. Despite receiving interest from other coaches, Hunt knew he had made the right decision after discussing his future with the coach. “Coach Casey has been incredibly helpful by pointing out my mistakes on the court.” He also mentioned Coach Akers, who assists him in staying in shape, “Whenever I need to get in the gym, Coach Akers ensures I have everything I need to train correctly and meet my coach’s expectations.”
Why MATC?
Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Travis Mrozek sheds light on why the coaching staff was interested in Hunt. “We recruited Ky’Moni right out of high school, Hunt was named Player of the Year in Milwaukee City Conference (Golden Division) and WBCA All-State selection.” Coach Mrozek praises Hunt’s positive frame of mind, “Ky’Moni brings a positive attitude to practice every day and is always encouraging his teammates.”
Family’s Influence: Hunt’s Basketball Journey
Every athlete has reasons for playing their sport and sources of their inspiration. For Hunt, it’s his mother and his uncle who drive him. “My mother and uncle are my inspiration because my mother had to do a lot of things on her own to raise me and my brothers.” He says his mother never stopped believing in him or his siblings’ dreams. “She made sure we stayed on top of what we wanted to do.” Regarding his uncle, Hunt says, “He always pushed me to work hard, especially when others doubted me and I wanted to give up.” His uncle constantly reminds him that he can achieve his goals as long as he puts in the effort to be a great player. Hunt expressed his desire to play Division 1 basketball, “I would love to go D1 no matter what, but if that doesn’t work out, I want to play basketball overseas.”
