MATC Times wins awards in Wisconsin Newspaper Association contest

MATC Times Managing Editor Warren Murphy holds five Wisconsin Newspaper Association – Foundation Better Newspaper awards won by Iryna Levit, Jang Vuong, Warren Murphy, and the MATC Times staff after a luncheon on March 7, 2025. This photo was taken by a student photographer attending the event.

The entire MATC Times staff was recognized for their exceptional contributions to the newspaper and website, and individual staffers were acknowledged for their writing and photography. The Times won five awards at the Wisconsin Newspaper Association – Foundation Better Newspaper contest in Madison on March 7. This contest recognizes newspaper excellence across multiple categories and several circulation divisions.

The awards were as follows:

Website – MATC Times Staff (1st Place)

General Excellence (Newspaper) – MATC Times Staff (Honorable Mention)

Health Coverage – Warren Murphy (3rd Place)

Feature Photography – Iryna Levit (Honorable Mention)

Sports Photography – Jang Vuong (3rd Place)

A comment from one of the judges about the MATC Times newspaper: “A commendable effort by the staff of this publication. There was a diverse range of content with all the bases covered, albeit in a more brief manner than competitor entrant publications. Thank you for your hard work!”

With 11 awards won this spring, from the WNA and the CMA in New York, the MATC Times continues to focus on excellence and providing a voice for all of our students.

I joined the MATC Times in the 2023/24 academic year, due to my passion for journalism. I enjoy expressing myself through writing; I love a good synonym. It is exciting to bring stories to life with creativity. In my new role as Editor-in-Chief (2024/25), I get to experience the journey of creating a newspaper and all that entails. I help students share their stories through our website and print publication. We want to provide a voice for all students at MATC and the issues they care about.

In my free time, I enjoy reading, learning new things, studying quotes of wisdom, practicing fitness, dressing up, and having fun through new experiences.
