When it comes to team leadership, it’s often the seasoned players who take on the role. Sophomore women’s softball player Ava Marx is a prime example of this.
Who is Ava Marx
A graduate of Muskego High School in WI, Ava has been a valuable member of MATC’s softball team for two years, playing both third and first base. With the playoffs approaching, Marx is excited about making new memories. Off the field, Ava enjoys unwinding with her favorite TV show, Pretty Little Liars, and the movie Mamma Mia. Her favorite artists are Lainey Wilson and Taylor Swift. In ten years, Marx sees herself working for the city of Milwaukee as a crime investigator.
Marx’s Challenges on the Field
Marx admits that being part of a team that changes annually comes with challenges. “Every year is a whole new lineup because we’re only here for two years,” she explains. One of her biggest hurdles has been getting to know the freshman and transfer students. Assistant Coach Steve Champagne and Marx’s teammates, Ryen Pagano and Mia Carani, all play a significant role in helping her grow as a captain and a softball player. She mentions their support pushes her to strive to do better both on and off the field.
A Father’s Inspiration for Softball
Marx’s passion for softball is inspired by her father, who played baseball throughout his life. “I always loved going to his games and watching him catch,” she says.
Marx During the Offseason.
During the offseason, Marx has dedicated her time to practicing softball and working out, she also enjoys going to concerts and spending quality time with friends and family. Despite a busy schedule during softball season with doubleheaders, Marx feels like she balances both athletics and academics pretty well. She is currently pursuing an associate’s degree in science, and she appreciates the flexibility of online classes. “ I don’t have to go to my classes in person, which is nice,” she says.
Possibility of going DIII
Looking ahead, Marx plans to transfer to UW-Platteville next year, with hopes of continuing her softball journey at the Division 3 level. “Regardless of whether I play softball or not, I’m going to try for the team,” she says. “Not gonna lie, it’s a little stressful.”
Coach Kunter’s Insights on Marx.
Head Coach Joseph Kunter says that Marx this year after batting .358 with five home runs and 26 RBIs (runs batted in) across 42 games. “She goes all out on the field; her dedication to practice is what all coaches hope for when recruiting softball players,” he says. Coach Kunter also notes that Marx is selfless and is willing to sacrifice her playing time to give others an opportunity. “She doesn’t miss practice,” he says.
