MATC’s Asian Affinity Group (AAG), an employee group focused on providing a safe space for people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent, hosted an event on April 29th, 2025 titled, “Beyond the Model Minority Myth: A Chinese-American’s Story.” The event, co-sponsored by MATC’s Asian Student Association, featured Christine Leung – an AAG co-lead and Web Design Specialist at MATC, who presented the Model Minority Myth to MATC students, staff, faculty, and community members.
The event opened with remarks made by Dr. Yan Wang, VP of Student Enrollment and Retention, and Michael Rogers, VP of Student Engagement and Community Impact. Following the opening remarks, presenter Leung then shared what it was like growing up as a second-generation American, her path to MATC, and the negative impact of the Model Minority Myth. After her story, Leung was joined by an MATC student panel to further explore the myth.
After the program, attendees worked in breakout sessions to solve issues related to the model minority myth. District Student Association Vice Chair Yeng Tha Vue, who was vocal at the event said, “This event was a way to bring attendees to touch base on the topic of model minority myth; it is a stereotype that portrays Asian Americans, as universally successful, obedient, and high-achieving particularly in academics and income. While it may sound positive on the surface, it’s actually quite harmful. It creates unrealistic expectations, masks the diversity and struggles within Asian communities, and silences those who are struggling, especially when it comes to mental health.”
