Colleges and universities allocate budgets to athletic needs, such as jerseys, travel, equipment, and coaching staff salaries. At MATC, the athletic department receives an annual allocation from student fees. The budget for all athletic expenses, including travel, vehicle rentals, etc. for the 2024/25 academic year was $1,289,565.00.
Coaching Staff’s Salaries
While coaching staff are compensated, the majority are part-time employees who also hold full-time jobs outside of MATC. “Our head coaches receive a stipend of $13,000 to $15,000 for a 12-month contract, depending on their experience,” said MATC’s Athletic Director Randy Casey.
Supporting Athletic Staff
In addition to coaches, MATC’s athletic department employs photographers and coordinators. “Occasionally, the college’s photographers may attend games or capture annual team pictures,” said Casey. The athletic staff often doubles up, serving in multiple roles during events. Assistant coaches, however, receive lower compensation compared to head coaches.
Athletic Scholarships
Scholarships are an integral part of college athletics, and MATC offers athletic scholarships that cover the cost of tuition. “Athletes can receive partial or full scholarships,” said Casey. “A partial scholarship covers 12 credits per year, while a full scholarship covers 24 credits per year.
Coverage for Team Expenses
All nine MATC sports programs receive budget allocations to cover transportation, lodging for overnight trips, meals, officials, and operating supplies such as uniforms, sports equipment, travel gear, and vehicle rentals. “We are required to complete the EADA (Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act) survey every year,” said Casey. This annual report discusses the athletic department’s budget and expenses from the previous year. “This document is a public record and is on the athletic website,” he added.
Travel Expenses
Traveling and competing against other teams can be expensive; in order to manage costs, teams limit their traveling to where the games are held. “Unless a team qualifies for a national championship, it depends on where we travel to play, as the transportation costs vary by distance,” says Casey.
The better a team is, the more the athletic department invests due to the costs associated with competing in Regional and National tournaments.
