The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for portions of Wisconsin, including all MATC locations, from Wednesday, July 23, through Thursday, July 24. The heat index is expected to exceed 100 degrees, creating dangerous heat conditions. Students and employees are encouraged to:
-
Reschedule outdoor activities to early morning or late evening hours.
-
Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothes.
-
Be prepared for the heat while waiting for public transportation.
-
Carry an umbrella for shade.
-
Plan to provide a place for children, the elderly, pets and those with pre-existing medical conditions to cool off. Check for public cooling centers here.
-
Never leave children or pets in a vehicle.
-
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty! Drink plenty of fluids and avoid sugary and alcoholic drinks, which can cause you to lose more body fluid.
-
Be aware of the signs of heat-related illnesses: dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea and weakness. Those suffering from heat exhaustion should move to a cool area, sip cool water and seek medical attention if symptoms don’t improve. Heat exhaustion can quickly lead to heat stroke with confusion and loss of consciousness. This requires immediate medical attention. Please call 911.
