There are a lot of groups at MATC making a difference. One of those is the Black Excellence Leadership Alliance (BELA). It is an employee affinity group that advocates for the voices of Black employees.
Kyle Hayden is a business pathway advisor and representative of BELA (Bee-La). “This unique alliance was created to promote equity. It is a dedicated space for employees of African-American descent to work behind-the-scenes and shape a positive narrative for students.” Hayden stated.
How BELA Started
It was officially formed on Juneteenth last year. With new staff coming in, it has grown expeditiously with 15 additional members since its establishment. A growth moment for the alliance was MATC day. Last fall, 40 employees signed up for the group.
How Staff Can Join
Any employee who identifies as African-American and wants justice for all can join if they want to support students. “BELA is not an exclusive group. Member application forms are received through HR. All can join, sign up and you belong.” Hayden says. All dates and times for the monthly group meetings can be found in MATC’s Week Ahead emails.
