Dr. Anthony Cruz, president of MATC, is blending fun and fitness with his passion for pickleball, a sport that helps him connect with others.
Cruz said he never played pickleball in high school or college, but he began competing in community tournaments while living in Florida. “I loved the fast pace and quick points,” he said.
He said playing the game is a great way to build relationships. Cruz plays at least once or twice a week, usually with friends who share his enthusiasm. Occasionally, he visits local courts to play with others who are looking for a match.
In late January, MATC announced the addition of two new pickleball courts at the Downtown Campus. “I was very excited to know that students, faculty, and staff would be able to play pickleball at MATC,” Cruz said. He hopes the new courts will encourage people to try the sport and enjoy the game.
Cruz is also a strong supporter of MATC athletics, often attending games. “I am very proud of our volleyball team winning the region championship for the first time,” he said.
He admires the hard work and dedication of the student-athletes. “I know how challenging it can be for student-athletes to balance their athletic activities with the rigor of college classes,” he said.
Last year, Cruz attended at least one game for each team. “They were all memorable because I know how hard our student-athletes work to be successful,” he said.
