The talents of MATC’s Cosmetology program are now showcased in the M Building at the Downtown Campus. Traci Dorn, the department’s educational assistant and a local cosmetologist, created a display near room M124 to highlight student work within the program, which includes barbering, aesthetics (skin care), and nail technology. The display’s theme, “BARCOS (Barbering Cosmetology)/NAILS, where stars are born!!!” aims to celebrate the students’ accomplishments.
Originally a vintage model featuring old-school blow dryers and clippers, the display was recently updated with a more modern look. It now features mannequins with styled hair, showcasing the before-and-after process of student haircuts. Other examples of student work include braiding, hair extensions, and a meticulous nail display. A particularly poignant element is a nail art project dedicated to Sade Robinson, an MATC student who was tragically murdered last year. “We were wary of the idea at first… It’s in the display case, it’s not going to be moved,” Dorn said, explaining the care taken with the tribute.
A timer in the display is set to 10, which Dorn says represents the idea that “we’re all tens.” It also symbolizes the timed nature of tests and assignments within the program.
Program Details
Dorn provided more details about some of the technical diploma programs available to students:
- Nail Technician Technical Diploma: This is an eight-week program designed to get students into the workforce quickly. Dorn noted that the program focuses on preparing students for the state board exam, resulting in an impressive passing rate. “When you come to school (at MATC), your main goal is to be professional and licensed,” she said, crediting the instructors’ dedication for the students’ success.
- Barbering Technical Diploma: Barbering students complete all Cosmetology program courses, with the exception of makeup and nail services. Each student receives a kit with 12 mannequins to practice different haircut techniques, from short to long styles. Students must complete a specific number of hairstyles, cuts, and coloring treatments to qualify for their license.
- Aesthetician Technical Diploma: Students receive spa information and the science behind skin. They learn all the muscles and structure of the face and what type of product to use for each person’s skin type. The program goes in depth with the chemistry and science behind spa services. Students incorporate their education in a spa lab at the Mequon Campus. The spa lab performs hand-dips, neck and back massage, facials, elite facials, makeup service, and other services. After earning the technical diploma, students can apply their credits toward an Aesthetician Skin Care Therapist associate degree.
