There is help for students who suffered severe damages from recent flooding. Areas hit from heavy rain in the Milwaukee area in August include: Silver Spring, Hampton Heights, Glendale, 40th & Congress Streets and the Suburban area of Wauwatosa.
Students affected by the situation are encouraged to visit Sherman Park grocery store and use free prepaid gift cards provided through MATC’s Fast Fund program. Sherman Park grocery is located at 4315 W. Fond du Lac Ave.
Sherman Park grocery stores hours are: Mon: CLOSED, Tue. – Sun.: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
“Sherman Park grocery store is the only full scale African American grocery store in the entire state,” according to Maurice Wince. He and his wife Yashica Spears own the grocery store. The store has been in the Sherman Park neighborhood for three years, “bringing fresh fruits and vegetables, addressing childhood obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension,” to an area that Wince said did not have “a full-scale grocery story for more than 15 plus years.”
The store is a resource for the 40,000 residents in the Sherman Park neighborhood, and now, Wince said “we’ve expanded our territory to the MATC students in collaboration with the Fast Fund…This is a resource made available to the MATC students to assist them with food and security and affordable groceries and fresh fruits and vegetables and a soul food and or hot deli.”
“This collaboration wouldn’t have been possible without the Executive Director MATC Fast Fund Bria Burris and Board Member for Spring Bank and the Sherman Park Grocery store’s Banker Jasmine Mercado,” Wince said.
