Times Editor-in-Young voters may have more influence than they realize, and hold the ability to drastically affect this election.”I think that there is sense among the next generation of voters, that we are at a defining moment of history,” Senator Barack Obama said during a recent conference call. After describing the state of the country he said, “This isn’t an election to sit out. This one is as important as any election that you’ll probably ever participate in.”
Obama believes that so many young people are interested in this election because “if we don’t deal with these critical issues now, then at some point we may be to late.”
Obama expressed the “stark” differences between him and McCain. He said that he hopes that young people are getting familiar with their various positions and their track records, so that when they go to vote they “will be fully informed.”
During the conference students were allowed to ask questions. One question concerned affirmative action. He answered by saying that it could be good if “properly structured.” However, if it is rigid, then it can be abused, which then makes it unfair. “Although, it can be a useful tool, the truth is, in terms of bringing about long-term racial equality, it’s a limited tool.” He explained that with the dropout rates, there aren’t enough minorities with skills to even get into universities.
Obama stated the greater concern is affording college more than affirmative action in the universities. He briefly explained his plan of providing college scholarships in exchange for 100 hours of community service per year, which will include military service. Another area to serve could be politics he said, adding, “We need the best and the brightest being involved in public service.”
He explained this further after being asked about Kennedy’s Serve America Act, which he supports. “I think that one of the most important experiences that young people can have is serving their country or community,” he stated.
One student expressed concerns about finding a job after graduation. Obama admitted, “I don’t think that there is any doubt that we are going to be in a recession for several months,” adding that the recent rescue package is only a “start.”
After Obama explained his economic plan he said, “Young voters are going to make the difference.” He added, “So, I hope everybody is getting registered. I hope everybody’s voting, because I think we have an opportunity not to just change the country, but change the world in this election.
