Hey! Give or take, the “Christmas Creeps” are awake!
Have you heard or seen? Advertisements of sales for the Christmas holidays are here. Retailers are putting the goods (items for purchase) for the Christmas stock on sale and doing it early. They have many people who can’t wait to participate in the righteousness of helping the economy by consuming products at those special early sales the retailers have to offer.
For instance, take Black Friday. Stores are opening up earlier than they did last year. Brookfield Square Mall opened at 8 p.m. the night of Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, and stayed open through Black Friday, Nov. 29. This year they are opening up two hours earlier than last year and some people are getting prepared while praising the opportunity. Let’s face it, a good deal is a deal, right?
However, some people are more interested in the actual holiday than in being an overly ready consumer. People believe Thanksgiving Thursday is about one thing: family. Retailers who are keeping Black Friday to the day after Thanksgiving are conscious of the fact that consumers like to consume, and employees might like to spend the holiday with loved ones rather than working. “Mental slavery” is how Liberal Arts student Andres Garcia describes it. Stores who are advertising items for Christmas earlier are basically giving people the impression that “Today is that perfect day,” and “You should and/or can buy your love”; since in today’s society material “stuff” means a lot and receiving that “stuff” means “love.” That is called taking what you know to benefit you and yours, not caring about that “family” who will be torn apart in the end because “Daddy” wanted to show his “love” by buying “stuff” and save money, so on Thanksgiving Thursday “Daddy” wasn’t home for dinner with the rest of the “family.” Let’s face it; that can tear a family apart, right?
Should retailers respect the holiday season more and not just focus on advertising the new sales they have for their products, or should people respect the retailers more and understand that retailers are a part of what helps build the economy through supply and demand? Let’s face it; your perspective in life is choosing a side in battle, right?
