Men burn Chaparrals to keep fire stoked
MATC men’s basketball team is on a roll. The latest squad to get plowed over was the College of DuPage Chaparrals on Jan. 31. The 19th victory of the season for MATC was an 83-67 knockout.
Four players scored in double-digits for MATC. Guard/forward Melvin “Mass Destruction” Brown scored 15 points on a variety of nifty layups, and a two-handed annihilation alley-oop from point guard Draylen Fair that brought the gym to its feet in thunderous appreciation. Fair ended the game with 10 points and two assists.
Forward/center Steve Stovall, Jr. added 12, with several baskets coming after impressive face-up jumpers that left Stovall’s defenders hapless and demoralized.
Guard Jabari Hobson was a bully inside for MATC, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Hobson’s 10 boards led all players for the game.
Point guard Maher Hakim displayed a true command of his position, leading the way with three assists and two steals.
MATC outrebounded DuPage by 46 to 33. MATC shared the ball better than DuPage, with a total of 12 assists besting the Chaparrals’ six. And MATC shot the ball better from outside, hitting nine 3-pointers to DuPage’s two.
The result of the game had a lot to do with MATC being the more athletic of the teams. MATC ran faster and jumped higher in a game with a lot of running and jumping.
It was a sweet relief for the Stormers to win the game as solid-handedly as they did.
Their Jan. 7 matchup with DuPage was victory for MATC but the result was a lot closer, with MATC winning by the slim margin of 63-61.
The Stormers will return to their home court on Feb. 18 to take on Harper College and on Feb. 21 to play Joliet Junior College.
