A distinctive musical event: An afternoon with Nineteen Thirteen

In the C-Building Auditorium on Feb. 20, the band Nineteen Thirteen plays the song “Mr. Panicker,” while Victor DeLorenzo plays the drums and percussion instruments (left), with Janet Schiff on the cello, and Greg Lopez on the other drums (right).

Nineteen Thirteen played at the Downtown Milwaukee campus at the C-Building Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 20.
The members of Nineteen Thirteen are: Janet Schiff, cello; Victor DeLorenzo, percussion; Greg Lopez, drums. The most recognizable musician in Nineteen Thirteen is DeLorenzo, whose energetic drumming was a key part of what made the Violent Femmes such a great band.
But the most captivating instrument in this trio is a Romanian cello, made in 1913 and played by Schiff, and is the reason they named the band Nineteen Thirteen. Students from the Music Occupations Student Organization (MOSO) were there to help with the band’s sound and lights; furthermore, students from the photojournalism class were also on hand to photograph the event.
Their music is a unique experience. Chamber rock would be the best way to describe their genre. In addition, the audience was captivated by the interaction of electrically amplified acoustic cello, and stereo-sound percussive drum rhythms. If you get the chance to see Nineteen Thirteen, you won’t be disappointed.
