The West Allis campus has welcomed back its same Student Government officers from the 2014 fall semester, including President Antoinette Jackson. Jackson, an Associate of Arts program student, has been a representative for the organization since 2011.
“Constitution Day, fall 2011, my adviser, Patrice Jefferies, was in the hallway happy and smiling,” Jackson shared. “She asked me to fill out an application for Student Government. I filled out the application and within three minutes I was volunteering for Constitution Day.”
Jackson’s involvement did not stop there. “In 2012 and 2013, I was treasurer and that year I moved up to vice president.”
It was after this period that Jackson came to believe she was ready for an even higher office. “I thought I had learned how everything goes, so why not go for president? I ran for president and was voted in for 2014.”
Jackson devotes much of her time to serving the entire student body of the West Allis campus, but knows that working directly with her fellow officers and government members will have the most concentrated positive consequence.
“I would like to have the most impact on the people I have helped over the years,” Jackson said, “but most importantly the Student Government at the West campus, so we can keep saying West is best by doing everything we can to help our students, community and, most importantly, each other.”
Comment cards that can be found around campus are an effective way for students to communicate their wants and desires to Student Government, but Jackson can think of a more direct way to get the message through. “Come up to us, say hi, and tell us your concerns.”
