Stay Connected: Campus adds device charging stations

At all MATC campuses, charging stations are placed around so students can use them to recharge items like cellphones or laptops absolutely free. Carina Chavec, a Dental Hygiene program student, is using one of the many charging stations at the Downtown Milwaukee campus to recharge her cellphone for future use.

It’s very hard nowadays to leave the house and not see someone using some form of mobile device. Whether it’s a smart phone, laptop, or even a smartwatch, it’s obvious to see we live in a very connected age.

How do we keep our devices running on the go? The simple answer is to bring a charger, but it’s tough to find space to plug it in. A solution that Student Services had was  to provide  mobile charging stations.

There is a mobile charging locker available at the Milwaukee, Mequon, Oak Creek, and West Allis Campuses. The lockers provide power outlets for charging mobile devices. They are secured with a user-selected, three-digit combination.

Students will be able to open up any of the available spaces and store the device inside plugging it into an outlet inside the locker.

Operating instructions are posted on the units and are self-explanatory. Use of these lockers is free and is meant to be “convenient for students,” said Archie Graham Director of Student Life.

Graham added, “For security purposes, cameras are stationed near the charging area, and campus security officials will have access to the lockers. The only real challenge to the charging stations use is how to keep non-students from charging their devices.”

Any student will be able to utilize the stations, and it is recommended that if any device is considered missing, the student should report it to campus security.

There is a fast-growing demand to keep personal devices charged, especially on campus. The charging units provide convenient charging of phones, tablets, and other mobile devices for students. The charging stations are equipped with cables that cover most devices on the market today.

A charged device equals a connected student, and on today’s campuses connectivity is essential.
