Any Given Column- An Introduction
Hello readers, my name is Keith Schubert, Sports Editor, and this is the first edition of my new column ‘Any Given Column’. To get started, I just want to tell you a little about my past, my thoughts, and what to expect out of this column.
I grew up just a few short miles from MATC Downtown Milwaukee campus in the Village of Shorewood, where I went to high school. For the majority of my childhood, I was raised by a single mother. To some extent being raised by a single mother really shaped my interest in professional sports because that’s where I looked to find male role models.
As a kid, I wanted nothing more than to be a professional basketball player, but reality set in quickly, as I realized that being a 5’5 kid with rheumatoid arthritis would not cut it in the NBA. That’s when I decided to join the varsity golf team in high school. I knew I couldn’t play sports but I still wanted to find a way to make sports a hobby and that’s how my sports reporting hobby blossomed.
After high school, I enrolled at MATC but didn’t really take it seriously for the first couple of years. I skipped and dropped classes and my grades were in the dumpster. It wasn’t until I joined the MATC Times that I felt like I had found a career path that was right for me. Since I’ve joined the newspaper I have made the Dean’s List four consecutive semesters. That is why I always encourage people to get involved in extracurricular activities.
I am the Sports Editor at the MATC Times and I couldn’t be happier. It gives me a sense of purpose, it challenges me to keep succeeding and the people I work with are wonderful. The biggest perk of being the Sports Editor is I get to write this column!
First and foremost this column will be about sports, but as I continue to grow as a writer I hope to expand my horizons beyond sports and be able to cover and report on a wide variety of topics.
Now to the fun stuff, my thoughts and opinions about sports culture in today’s world. I mentioned before I wanted to be a professional basketball player, growing up and still to this day basketball is my favorite sport. My favorite team is the Milwaukee Bucks and I think that Giannis Antetokounmpo is the future superstar that this city needs to take our program to the next level.
I am an avid Packer fan and my bold prediction for their future is that Aaron Rodgers will get us to the Super Bowl two more times, and bring the Lombardi trophy back home one more time. Despite my love for the Packers, I do not love the NFL. I think that concussions are something that need to be severely reviewed. I think that kick offs should be taken out of the game, and that deflate gate was just a flashy distraction story to take the attention off the concussion and domestic abuse problems that are running rampant in the NFL.
The Brewers are my favorite baseball team and in my opinion we are wildly exceeding the expectations of what was supposed to be the first year of a long rebuilding process for the team. Basically, I love Wisconsin sports and hopefully you guys will read along as our seasons continue and our teams continue to grow.
Lastly I want to thank Bob Hanson, Faculty Advisor MATC Times, for providing me with this amazing opportunity to grow as a writer, student and human being. Hanson is a standup guy, who helped me refocus and realize what is really important in life. I don’t think he knows how much he has helped in just the short time I have been working with him, and for that I am eternally grateful.
If any readers have questions for me or any suggestions/comments on what I should write about feel free to contact me at [email protected].
