Are you ready to take the next steps to prepare for a successful entrance into the workforce? If you’ve answered “yes”, there are a few things you should consider. Building a resume, creating a Handshake profile, and strategically preparing for a job/internship are three things you can do to prepare yourself for success!
Do you have a Resume?
In a tough job market, you need a resume that helps you stand out among other applicants. Most hiring managers will tell you that they use a resume as a screening tool to select which candidates to interview and which to rule out. A professional, well-written resume is your ticket to the interview and your chance to get the attention of potential employers.
A resume should showcase your skills and work experience in an easy-to-read, logical, and concise format. Think of your resume as your very own 30-second commercial. A resume workshop was held on February 15. If you did not attend this workshop, but need assistance with building a resume? No problem, Connect with the employment team to schedule an appointment.

Looking for a Job or preparing for an Internship?
Whether you are a current student, recent graduate or soon-to-be graduate, looking for a job or internship can be overwhelming. However, being prepared is half the battle. It’s important to note that when you apply for a position, you are competing against other qualified applicants. When searching for a job/internship, consider what makes you unique and sets you apart from other candidates and how those unique attributes can contribute to the company’s success. Be prepared to identify what skills (soft, technical, transferrable), experiences, strengths, and qualities you bring to the table. If you are preparing for an internship, the key is to start applying to internships as EARLY as possible! You should begin applying to internships at least 4 – 5 months (1 semester) prior to the term you plan to intern. An internship experience looks great on your resume and you gain experiences to share during interviews. MATC CareerHub is available to provide you with tools, resources, and help exploring new career options.
To look for jobs/internship opportunities and meet with employers in your field, consider attending a Career Fair. MATC is hosting a Diversity Career Fair on Wednesday, March 6, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Downtown Campus, M605. Meet employers committed to recruiting, hiring and retaining a diverse workforce. Attending employers are seeking students and alumni to fill their full-time and part-time jobs, internships and apprenticeship opportunities. If you are currently seeking an internship or interested in a summer or fall 2024 internship, this is the place to start! Many of these employers are seeking to fill immediate needs and offer flexibility in scheduling. Please register here on Handshake. Don’t forget to bring copies of your professional resume along!
