Vice President Kamala Harris visited West Allis Central High School on July 23. While this was her fifth visit to Wisconsin this year, and her eighth as vice president, this was her first campaign rally as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. Harris entered the race after President Joe Biden dropped out on Sunday and endorsed Harris.
An enthusiastic crowd of around 3,000 people filled the gymnasium to listen to her 18 minute speech. People also gathered outside of the high school in support of Harris and so did Pro-Palestine protestors who demanded Harris take a stance on ending the genocide in Palestine. These supporters and protestors were accompanied by Trump supporters who too wanted to make their voices heard in response to Harris’ arrival in Wisconsin.
Linda Hansen: “I love the fact that Harris is female; it’s about time. She is going to be great for women who want equal rights and have the right to choose. It seems like our country is going backwards so we have to just be on top of things or else we lose our whole democracy.”
Audari Tamayo: “We’re here to let Kamala Harris know that we’re not gonna stand for continuation of Biden’s policies. I think that the two-party system only unites on U.S foreign policy and U.S. imperialism. We’re going to be taking (to) the street regardless of who’s in office and we’re going to take the streets until Palestine is free!”
Brandy Traylor: “I feel so empowered. It’s absolutely amazing and beautiful to see a woman who I honestly believe has a chance to rule our country. She is so powerful and she is an amazing speaker and I cannot wait to hit the ground and campaign for her. It’s time for a woman to do everything better than it’s being done and it’s literally history….The state of our country is a concern. I think we deserve all reproductive rights. They are our bodies. If you don’t agree with it then don’t do it, but don’t you dare try and make our bodies a political form of anything.”
