I love the phrase, “Literally, go take a hike” and wondered what that would look like in Milwaukee.
I hiked around and photographed at Forest Home Cemetery because I love to learn about our city’s rich history. The office provides a free, very thorough visitor guide. I know that cemeteries aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re interested in exploring MKE on the cheap, keep an eye out as I submit pictures to the Times throughout the summer.

A leader in Milwaukee's African American community, Ezekiel Gillespie became active in voting rights issues. He helped a friend open the first African American church in WI and during the Civil War, he assisted freedom seekers along the Underground Railroad. His headstone is in the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee.
