What it takes to play sports at MATC

Character, selflessness, dedication and commitment are what it takes to play sports. Here at MATC, student athletes take on all the rigorous activities of higher learning and still take time out of their busy lives to play sports.
We say play but really it’s work. They not only have to maintain a 2.0 GPA, they also must carry at least 12 credits per semester. So after a busy day at school, these dedicated individuals head out to the field, court or diamond for practice or a game.
Game days are always exciting, but they can take up a great part of the day. Most games are in the evening, and away games often involve hours of travel time. They still have homework to do; some have jobs, not to mention friends and family, but you won’t hear them complaining. They play for the camaraderie, fitness and personal pride that come from working with a team.
Baseball and softball season are next semester but the teams are already practicing in preparation for the upcoming season. Men’s and women’s basketball season begins soon, but they have been practicing for weeks. As the season winds down for men’s soccer and women’s volleyball, there is no lull in their drive to win.
It has been my privilege to watch these teams compete with great skill, sportsmanship and heart against opponents with twice the number of players. Winning isn’t just about the scoreboard, winning is a state of mind, and our Stormers athletes are all winners.
